Alice is tired of killing in the name of science and the quest for world dominance(?). So she ups and walks away. I agree not quite the smartest move from our arrogant, talented yet not so worldly young Alice, but this is how IMO the story correlates with the fairy tale.
Our skilled yet naive little killer (There are so many times I wanted to warm her backside!) seems to get herself into one situation after another... thank goodness for White!
Rabbit has all the earmarks of a loving protector and a ruthless leader. He sees what Alice can not. He sees the woman inside, the one who has the potential to love and to be loved. He just needs to find a way to bring her to heel and bring her softer side to the surface.
This has the sweetest romantic undertone to it and White just clicked for me. There is lots of blood and battles and some animosity from the soldiers - adds a bit of tension to their relationship.
Watching Alice find that there is a purpose for love and that it is quite possible to be a warrior and a woman was entertaining.
