I do, however, suggest you read the books prior to this one - IMO it gives the story more depth and the reader a stronger emotional connection to the characters I expected some fall out after King and Hector - I never saw the bloody Queen coming and if you thought King was vicious in his need to control and Hector with his vision to rule - the Queen takes "acquisition" and warfare to a whole different realm with her twisted ideas on the use of coercion, intimidation, and discipline to control her pawns Be prepared this is bloody brutal at times - so many secrets and betrayals - I was never sure who I could trust and who was a pawn in the bigger game.
