Irrelevant
Irrelevant
Jackie continues as she taps on the tablet screen. “They came up
with the label Irrelevant when they didn’t know what to do with us. We’re the
weirdos, the freaks, the handicapped, the artistic, the neurologically
different. We’re what they can’t control because we look at the world as being
beautiful and full of colour.”
My skin goosebumps and I want to cry and wrap my arms around her
and squeeze her like Jed did to me, but I feel like I’m close to understanding
something about myself I’ve never understood, so I stay completely still as she
flips the tablet so I can see the application Cristan showed me before.
“You see colours. You see patterns. You see beauty and wonder.
And you are many, many things Mallory, but not one of them makes you
Irrelevant.”

When we reach a large grey building with solar panels on the
sloped roof, I’m relieved to find it’s well-kept, and as with the other modern
structures in the city, he swipes his wrist, the panel illuminates, and a
robotic voice speaks. "Cristan. How’s it hanging dude?"
Cristan. His name is Cristan.
He laughs and sends me a wry look. “They’ve been messing with
the programming again.”
I want to ask how that is possible when all computers are
maintained by the central government, but the door opens with a swish that
makes me think of home.
However, inside is nothing like my quiet, ordered home. Unlike
my home unit, this enormous structure is filled with noise and mess. Worse,
there are dozens of Irrelevants dressed like Cristan and a straggly looking
animal that’s coming towards me. With horror, I realise the animal is missing a
leg.
And it’s all I can do to not silently scream.

The words slip out. “But where do
you draw the line? They’re already docking credits, they take our food, give us
no warning when new arrivals are coming. They treat us like crap. How long till
they stop sending meds? Or water purification? They keep us out here, just out
of reach, but why? Why not just let us fend for ourselves?”
Drew doesn’t react to my ongoing
argument; he’s heard everything before. “Cristan. Just stop. For one night,
switch off and enjoy your birthday. You can save the world tomorrow.”

From Irreverent
I tense my muscles and turn on my heel as I go over the plan
again. It seems simple and maybe if I weren’t such a jaded cynic, who’s spent
eighteen years seeing human beings at pretty much their worst, I’d see it
differently.
But I don’t trust Jackson. I don’t trust Trey. And a blonde
Irrelevant girl, who hums and rocks, who I’m supposed to be protecting, is at
the mercy of whoever else Jackson has hiding out here.
I send Trey a glance as we enter the common area. “How many
others are out here?”
Trey grabs a bag and throws it over his shoulder. He’s cagey,
which makes my skin rise. “See, now here’s the thing you didn’t get to talk
about with Jackson, the others, they are kind of….”
His face twists into a half smile. “Ghosts.”
I gape at him. There are almost three hundred people locked
inside Unit 2B, and seven other Units in my quadrant, that are all locked up
tight, with no food, or medicine getting in or out, my little brother is now in
danger and he’s talking about ghosts?
From Irradiate.
Derek looks even less pleased than I am when he gives me a
clipped nod. “We can no longer overlook the infractions. The Irrelevant boy
will be extracted, then Unit 2B will be made an example of.”
Fire floods my blood. I suck a breath in through my gritted
teeth. I’m centimetres away from him, so close I can see a vein pulsing under
his left eye. “What do you mean example of?”
The light that signals the lift is about to arrive illuminates.
Time starts to slow. I notice everything as if it’s in slow motion like in the
old movies I watched.
I see the tiny spot of moisture growing on his temple. The
unease amongst the guards.
They’re nervous. On alert. Probably concerned I’ll go berserk
again and do something stupid.
They have every right to be nervous. I’m fully prepared to do
something stupid.
I inhale slowly, filling my lungs as I ready myself to move. The
lift doors start to open, my pulse accelerates, eyes flicking to the closest
threats.
Derek expects me to follow meekly like a lamb to the slaughter.
He thinks he knows me. Understands what I’ll do and what I
value. He thinks he can manipulate me and get me to do what he wants.
He’s wrong. So, so, wrong.
