Expendables (Book 1)
ā€œTell me, Aleesha, why does the Wall exist?ā€
The question takes me aback. ā€œTo stop us getting Inside. To keep us separate.ā€
ā€œYes, but why? Why does there have to be Outsiders and Insiders?ā€
I find myself squirming slightly under his gaze. ā€œā€™Cos they want to keep everything for themselves. All the food, all the water, and with the Wall there they donā€™t even have to look at us. They can pretend like we donā€™t even exist.ā€ The words spill out and I sound so harsh, so bitter, that I surprise myself.
Bryn nods and stands back, seemingly satisfied. ā€œWell, youā€™re in the right place, then. We want to break down the barriers between those who live on either side of the Wall. Make London society more equal.ā€
Interesting. I wonder what rank this guy has in the Chain. Murdoch defers to him, but from the look on his face, Brynā€™s told me a lot more than he thinks I should know.
ā€œYouā€™ll go through the Wall together tomorrow. Meet at Pollard Square at nine.ā€ Murdoch stands up straight and leans slightly towards the door, clearly eager to get away.
I glance over at the boy. Trey. He wanders to the window, in a world of his own.
ā€œOh, I forgot to mention,ā€ Bryn says. ā€œThe Metz are after Trey. Youā€™ll need to go carefully to avoid them.ā€
I roll my eyes. Well this is going to be a party. Itā€™s hard enough keeping one person away from the Metz, and by the look of him, this kid will only be a liability. Theyā€™ll spot him a mile away with that hair; it lights him up like a bloody beacon. ā€œGreat.ā€
I push myself off the wall and turn to Bryn. ā€œNice meeting you.ā€
He nods in reply, but his gaze is still on the boy standing by the window.
ā€œYou too, Trey. See you tomorrow!ā€ I raise my voice slightly and the boy starts. As he turns, he disturbs the net curtains and sunlight peeks through into the room. It lights up his hair, making it glow around his face. It reminds me of a picture my mother once showed me in an ancient book. An angel, that was it. A messenger of hope.
I stifle a laugh as I turn to leave, toying with my own dark braid.
I donā€™t believe in angels. Or hope.

Expendables (Book 1)
At the next intersection, I glance back. There are two of them now, barely a hundred metres behind me, and as I watch, a third Metz officer joins them from higher up the road. My legs are so weak, I'm not sure how long even terror can drive me on.
----------------------------------------------
The slick fabric of my top slips through his fingers. There's a scream, and I realize it's coming from me, but it sounds so far away. Time slows and it feels as if I'm floating down, not falling. Bright colours dance across my eyes and I see nothing apart from the Wall.
----------------------------------------------
I can see the fear in his eyes. And something else. Worry. Worry for me? A warm feeling spreads through my chest. It cuts through the fear. It makes me feel brave.

Infiltrators (Book 2)
ā€œBut the system is set up around them.ā€
His voice in my ear makes me jump and my heart skips a beat. I hadnā€™t felt him creep up on me. I turn to find his face inches from mine.
ā€œThen we have to take down the system,ā€ I whisper.
----------------------------------------------
Fear radiates through me, freezing the air in my lungs. All the memories Iā€™d faced in the dark hours of the morning return, along with others that were buried even deeper, as if each memory I face unearths another one. Wave after wave of emotions wash over me. Anger, shame, desperation, defeat.
I push back against them, fighting for control of my body. She is here. And she doesnā€™t know whatā€™s about to happen. But I do.
----------------------------------------------
Iā€™d always hoped my father was a rich Insider, that heā€™d make me a legal citizen and give me a better life. A normal life.
ā€œWho are you?ā€
But of course, the amulet doesnā€™t answer.
Itā€™s a cruel thing, hope. It keeps you going, until one day it crumbles. And all youā€™re left with is despair.
----------------------------------------------
Justice and revenge. I had thought they were two words for the same thing. But I was wrong.

Defenders (Book 3)
His lips tighten to a thin line. ā€œThe answer is no ā€¦ Or at least, not yet. Iā€™ve been working on it night and day, but I still havenā€™t figured it out.ā€
Frustration echoes in his words as if heā€™s personally affronted by this challenge to his intellect. And with his words, the tiny flame of hope that had flickered within me dies, leaving behind an emptiness I donā€™t want to face.
----------------------------------------------
ā€œHow can you live with yourself? Knowing what youā€™ve done?ā€ My voice is a whisper on the breeze. Silence surrounds us. My hand trembles on the knife handle.
If youā€™re not prepared to kill him, youā€™ll die.
But I canā€™t do it. Canā€™t plunge the blade into the throat of a man who lies at my mercy.
One stab is all it would take. But still, my hand falters.
----------------------------------------------
I give her hand a squeeze, but I still canā€™t meet her eye. I feel like Iā€™m riding in a pod thatā€™s suddenly swerved in an unexpected direction, the life Iā€™d wanted fading into the distance behind me.
This is where I need to be. I know that now.
Then why do I feel like Iā€™m betraying the people I care about?
----------------------------------------------
Batons find their way into my hands from the officers who have fallen. I weave through the disorientated fighters, a whirlwind that smashes their kneecaps and jabs at their stomachs.
My height is an advantage ā€“ I can slip under their arms, almost invisible in the confusion. Each movement comes naturally, like a dancer completing a memorized routine, twisting and turning, never staying still long enough for one of their weapons to hit me.
Slowly, I carve a path through Primoā€™s fighters to the steps of the church.

Liberators (Book 4)
All my life, I have had to fight for survival. But sometimes the only way to survive is not to fight.
----------------------------------------------
I rock back on my heels, fingering the amulet around my neck ā€“ the gift from a woman who loved me enough to give up her life for me. She didnā€™t deserve to die, but that doesnā€™t mean that I donā€™t deserve to live.
----------------------------------------------
I stare at his face, memorizing the faint creases on his forehead, the colour of his eyes, the way his lips twitch at the corners. I drink him in as if he were a life-giving elixir, creating a photograph in my mind that I will never forget.
Then I drop my hand and turn to walk away.
----------------------------------------------

Her eyes search mine and for the first time, I feel like my mother sees me for who I truly am. Sees how Iā€™ve battled against myself to be the son they wanted me to be. Sees the shame Iā€™ve hidden inside when I failed again and again.
