When Emerson Tyler’s unrequited high school crush crashed into her first group meeting of the DSN’s social media department, it was strange to say the least. When she learned that her crush wasn't as “unrequited” as she’d always believed, things got even stranger.

She'd sworn on the day Bryce Nordlinger crushed her teenaged heart--not to mention ruined her reputation in order to save his lady-killer status--that she would never trust him or any man ever again. And she had no intention of breaking that oath, no matter how much more tempting he’d become as a grown up NHL star.

Bryce had always wanted Em to be more than the smart, snarky high school girl who helped him with his terrible English essays. But he’d been busy burnishing his rep as future jock stud, and when his fellow hockey bros caught him skating with her alone in a deserted rink, he’d chosen the easiest path--one that left her hurt in a way he never thought he’d be able to heal.

His complete shock at seeing her, all grown up and more beautiful than ever in the meeting room at DSN, morphed into a steel-plated resolve. He would win her back and make up for the mess he’d made of her high school senior year, while dragging the once-proud Detroit hockey program out of the dumpster fire and back to prominence at the same time.

“Ever the hero,” she said. “I am. And you’re welcome, by the way, for saving your sweet ass the other night.” “I think I paid you back pretty well.” She took a sip, enjoying how red his face got at that. “You did, indeed.” He held up his glass. “To paying each other back,” he said. She held up hers, wary, and yet allowing a tiny corner of herself to thaw. “Not sure that means what you want it to mean,” she said. “But sure. Cheers.” They clinked and sipped. “Don’t kid yourself,” she said after taking another bite of the pizza. “How so?” he asked, staring into her damn soul exactly like he used to. “I’m not going to bed with you again just because you brought me a take-out pizza and some screw-top wine.” “I’ll have you know that the screw-top wine came highly recommended by the wine shop guy.” “Wine shop guy?” She raised one eyebrow while picking a pepperoni off a slice. “Yeah, you know, at the gas station?” She threw her used paper towel at him. “Cheapskate! What are you worth? A few mil?” He shrugged. But she knew he was. Part of her was happy for him, he’d been through such hell as a kid. Another, louder part wanted to scream at him, pound his chest, call him names, ask him why in the hell he’d treated her like he had. She took a deep breath. That had been a solid decade and change ago. Time to move on. Let him apologize. Be the man he seemed to want to be for her. She shook her head at that, downed her wine, and bit back the words she wanted to say. They ate and drank for a few seconds in silence. “If you must know, this is super awkward,” he said, pushing away from the table and wiping his lips. “Oh? How so?” “I mean, you kind of took advantage of me that morning.” She burst out laughing. “And you’re complaining?” “No,” he said, leaning forward and grabbing her hands. “As long as you promise to do it again soon.”
