What are your top 10 favorite books/authors?

I loved Kathleen Woodiwiss and Johanna Lindsey and was so upset when they passed. But they’re who I read first when I was younger: I cut my teeth on them. They’re books are the ones I can read over and over. Sandra Brown, Kendra Elliott, Catherine Bybee, Desiree Holt, Susan Stoker, Peggy Jaeger, Harlan Coben, and David Gross.

How long have you been writing?

Since the fourth grade when I had an English assignment and wrote something about going to the doctor and getting a shot. The teacher liked it so much she made it into a play and invited parents and other classes to see it on a Friday afternoon.

Do the characters all come to you at the same time or do some of them come to you as you write?

They come to me as I write, especially the secondary characters. I have no idea when I start writing who might end up in my book.

Do you see writing as a career?

Yes, I love it.

What do you think about the current publishing market?

It’s hard out there, even with one of the big 5 or 6. They don’t wine and dine authors anymore like they used to and haven’t for years so it’s hard to get a contract with any of them. You still have to do as much promo through them as you do as an Indie author. And that’s the hardest part. You can spend quite a bit of money on ads, a VA for posting to social media, a launch team, learning KDP and Amazon, finding reviewers. The list goes on and on.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?

Romantic suspense and I write the same. I tried writing just sweet contemporary but didn’t like the book. I ended up with a suspense line in there too.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?

If at home, it’s usually in silence. If I had music on I’d be distracted and find myself singing along. But I write with a partner, we meet every Thursday at a hamburger joint, not many customers and we always sit in the very back booth. They have multiple TV’s on the wall on different channels and music playing. So, I have a cacophony of noises all at once and it becomes white noise because it’s not one specific sound.

Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?

I’m usually working on two or three at one time but they are all in different stages.

Pen or type writer or computer?

The first one was hand-written, and it took me longer to type it in the computer than it did to write it. I’ve been straight into the computer from then on. I found that I can delete and rewrite the same sentence in many different ways and then choose the best one.

Advice they would give new authors?

Write the next book, then write the next book, writ…
