A
fire is coming. It starts with a girl and a key.
After
her mother’s death, Clarissa doesn’t know how to connect with her
distant father. Her only friend is an oak tree who she can tell her
deepest secrets. When she discovers a mysterious key that unleashes a
long-forgotten fire spirit, she must find her voice to protect those
she loves.
"A
delightful, fantastical tale of how oak trees and humans can be
friends." -Dr. James Canton, author of "The Oak Papers"
Clarissa – Journey of a Book
by Giulietta M Spudich
Each book has its own individual journey, from idea to publication. Clarissa’s journey began with fire.
I watched fire, reflecting on its transformational nature as wood became ash, as flames grew large and then smaller, flickering from yellow to orange to red. How fire jumped from one ‘home’ to another, a travelling burn. How on a cold, winter evening it was a friend. These reflections awakened the character of the fire spirit in Clarissa.
I let the story live through my pen, did a few rounds of edits and had a professional editor look at it.
The editor and my wonderful publishers (Handersen Publishing) helped me make it friendly for both UK and US audiences, as we knew it would be read in both countries. And then it was ready … to be kid tested.
This is perhaps the most important step of getting feedback for my books as children are my target audience after all. Children 7-13 years old in both Cambridge, England and Lincoln, Nebraska read it … and we hit ‘publish’ once it was kid approved.
Each book has its own individual journey, though most books out there will have a journey like Clarissa’s. Inspiration followed by a joyful and agonizing blend of “elbow grease” - writing, getting feedback, revising, then the wonderful day of publishing and the even more wonderful days following of hearing from readers.
