EXCERPT 1 (PG13; 317 Words)
The woman pushed her hair back and shielded her eyes from the glare of the setting Florida sun. She watched with satisfaction as her soon to be ex-boss, Bobbi, drunk and disoriented—wearing that neon orange bikini as she jounced up and down on the runaway JetSki, heading to God only knew where. She glanced down at the scratches on her arms. Bobbi had fought and clawed like a cat, trying to get away from the bottle of booze. Cost of doing business. It had been worth the minor injuries.
Just a few more minutes and the sharks would be in a feeding frenzy. Bobbi’s screams for help melded in with the sounds of gulls laughing overhead.
She turned to the man at the wheel of the boat.
He sat transfixed by the sight of Bobbi turning into a speck in the distance.
She snickered. “Do you believe how long she held on? She should have been a rodeo queen instead of a department chair.”
He glanced up at her, his handsome face twisted in a snarl. “You think this is funny?”
She put a fist on her hip. “Since when did you grow a conscience?”
He shook his head. “I’ve killed a lot of people in my years, but this has got to be one of the sickest ways I’ve ever seen.”
“You, who have cut men’s heads off without batting an eye, think this is sick?”
He shuddered. “I’d rather have my head cut off than drown. You have time to think about it as you’re going under.”
She patted his shoulder. “Don’t worry. She was so drunk, she’ll pass out before she hits the water.”
The last sounds of the Jet Ski faded into the sea breeze.
He turned the engine of the cigarette boat over. “Well?”
“Not so fast.” She ran her fingers under the straps of her swimsuit. “I have another idea.”

DESIRE AND DECEPTION EXCERPT II (PG-13; 452 Words)
Dan’s forearm corded as he cast his fishing line. Brow furrowed under his lucky Ravens fishing cap, he aimed his baited hook under the waxy leaves.
After all this time, is Dan really mine?
He turned his head, raised his sunglasses, winked at her, and blew her a kiss.
Her breath caught in her throat and a host of butterflies flapped around in her stomach. Of course, he’s mine. We’re on their honeymoon. What could possibly go wrong?
He shook a finger at her. “You better be thinking about something other than your job.”
She laughed out loud. “I am not thinking about work.”
“No, you obsess about it.”
“And you don’t about Randallstown Community Hospital?”
He held the fishing pole with one hand like a jousting lance and cocked his head, considering her question. “As a vascular surgeon, I have to obsess over my work. The smallest of slip-ups can kill a patient.”
“My work saves lives, too. I don’t have the instant gratification or risk that you do. But if I improve one kid’s life with my work, then it makes it all worthwhile.”
He nodded. “True. But no one dies if you don’t teach a class, go to a committee meeting, or publish a paper.”
“If I don’t make the third-year tenure review cut, my career at BMU will die. And I can pretty much forget about going anywhere else in Baltimore or DC. I’ll be considered damaged goods.”
He frowned and flapped his hand at her. “Pffft. Not only is Bobbi your boss, she’s your friend. She put you on her five million dollar grant. With her in your corner, your tenure and promotion are a slam dunk.”
Easy for him to say.
“If I don’t get a paper published in the Journal of Child Abuse Prevention, I’m out on the curb.” Sarah should have gone to see Bobbi when her boss texted her at end of the Women in Science Conference on Sanibel three days ago. But Bobbi knew they planned to go across the water to Punta Gorda for their honeymoon. Sarah chewed on her lower lip. Typical Bobbi. Waiting until the very last minute of the conference to say she needed to talk in private, away from the other attendees.
Sarah patted her pants pockets and realized in her rush to get out the door, she’d left her cell at home. The sun’s glare pierced the side of her shades and she closed her eyes. What did Bobbi text? “Investigating a faculty member. Need your help. Trust no one. Tell no one.” Though the air was hot and humid, Sarah shivered with an unexpected chill and crossed her arms to battle sudden goosebumps.

DESIRE AND DECEPTION EXCERPT III (PG13, 336 Words)
The Mexican national anthem blared from a red telephone.
She moaned. “Not now.”
“You’d better grab the damn thing before it gets to the next verse.” He stepped away from her. “You know how your father is.”
Isabel stomped to the phone. “He has the worst timing!” She snatched the phone off the hook. “Hola, Papa,” she said in her sweetest little girl voice.
“Hola Chiquita!” Carlos Rios’ voice boomed out of the phone, audible to all in a fifty-foot range.
“Papa, I can hear you fine. You don’t have to shout,” she said in English.
“I saw the news about your boss. You can become the Chairman now!”
She glanced at Tomas and rolled her eyes. “I’m not even a full professor yet, Papa. The University won’t think I’m qualified for her job.”
His voice swelled with pride. “My baby girl, all grown up and a professor.”
Isabel cringed and wished he wouldn’t do this every time he called. She knew he’d had a hard life and had become a powerful man by using his wits, and fists, but this was getting tiresome.
“Me, I’m so bad, I have to call you on a secure phone line, so the federales can’t hear us. But you, you’re the first in our family to go to college. The first to get a real job. You’re legit.”
“Papa…”
He gave a little sob. “You make me so proud!”
She sighed. “Thank you, Papa.”
His voice became all business. “Apply for her job. Maybe you’ll get extra points for being Mexican.”
He’d never understand the world of academics, no matter how she tried to explain. In his world, you wanted something, you took it. She had to play by the rules‒okay, maybe she bent them sometimes‒to get what she wanted. “Si, Papa.”
“Hold on. Your Mama wants to talk with you.”
Girding herself for her mother’s interminable droning about her grandchildren, Isabel motioned to Tomas to get her a drink. She’d need a stiff one to get through this.
