HOW TO ROPE A LOYAL COWBOY by Anya Summers
Excerpt #1
With the ad in hand and hope in her heart, Morgan climbed out of the dusky red seventy-eight truck she had inherited. It was the only thing the bank wasn’t taking, because it was fully paid off and not worth the cost of seizing it. Well, that and her clothes. But she had been forced to sell everything else. All the furniture in the house and gas station, her grandma’s wedding china and linens, the beds and mattresses, dining table and television… all of it, to pay off her pop’s debts. She’d been using a sleeping bag on the floor of her old bedroom for weeks now, trying to figure out her next step.
Morgan traversed the stairs, avoiding the bright yellow whiffle bat lying on one of the steps. It was early yet, but it was also a Sunday morning. She knew that Noah had Sundays off from working in the stables. She knew because she had called the stables to check when he would be in.
She had spent the few spare pennies she had left from working at the grocery store in town to get the dress she was wearing pressed at the cleaners, because she needed this job. She figured this dress, with its slim, elegant lines in navy blue that she had normally worn to church on Sundays, would make her look composed, and perhaps older than her twenty-three years.
Standing before the heavy dark walnut front door, she felt like she had gigantic frogs hopping around in her belly. Morgan had no idea why she was so nervous. She knew Noah. All her life, he had been coming into her pop’s gas station. But then again, she had always been fascinated by Noah, for as long as she could remember.
When she was a little girl, and he came into the station when she was there helping her pops out, he would tweak her nose or tug on her braid. And ever since high school, any time she saw him, he always made her skin feel three sizes too small.
He was older, wiser, and without a doubt one of the hottest guys she had ever seen. Not that she was going to let her hormones deter her from seeking a job with him.
Morgan rapped her knuckles on the door. She held her breath as she waited. From beyond the door, the sound of war whoops and stomping of little feet over hardwood resounded.
Noah opened the door. All her pent-up breath expelled in a rush. The man was sin personified. He looked disheveled, in a pair of jeans that were slung low around his waist— criminally low, as in, she was being treated to an unobstructed view of his defined obliques, along with the rest of his breathtakingly muscled chest covered by a smattering of dark hair. His bronze hair was ruffled, and stuck up in spots, like he had run his fingers through it a million times so far this morning.
A few days’ growth of dark scruff lined his firm, angular jaw. There was a dark-haired boy wrapped around each one of his calves—both stared up at her with bright blue eyes the color of the midday sky.
“Morgan? What are you doing here, sweetheart?” Chills suffused her at the deep bass tones in his voice. They always seemed to resonate in her chest—and further south.
At the confusion in his hazel eyes, framed by some of the longest lashes she had ever seen on a man, she pasted a smile on her face, and replied, “Answering your wanted ad in the paper.”
Excerpt #2
Noah shot her a wink. And her body responded in kind, flutters erupting deep in her abdomen. She couldn’t lust after her new, much older boss. It would be wrong, right? She needed to strike the image of sex and Noah from her brain.
Noah headed out of the room, and left her alone with Wade and Zack.
The two boys stared at her with suspicion in their blue gazes, even though they knew her from the gas station. She plastered a friendly smile on her face, the one she normally used for irate customers, piling on the charm in her voice. “So tell me, what are some of the things you guys like to do? Because I think we’re going to have loads of fun together.”
“Can you ride a horse?” Zack asked, his expression rather serious for a four-year-old. At least, she thought it was Zack. They were identical twins, and it was tricky telling them apart. It didn’t help that they liked to dress alike from head to toe.
She’d have to do something like color code their outfits each day, until she became familiar enough with them to tell which one was which.
“I have, a few times. I’m not that good at it though.” Not to mention, she hadn’t done it in years.
She reckoned she’d lost a few brownie points for that answer as the brothers looked at one another. They were still too young for the eye roll. Except, she could tell they figured they had her number, and were already cooking up trouble.
“But, I do know how to make a clay volcano that spews lava,” she went on. “We could make that one of our projects to build this summer.”
That got their attention. Two pairs of bright blue eyes turned in her direction, with their brows raised and excited glee in their eyes.
“Really? Will it burn everything to the ground?” Wade asked in awe. Like he would be okay if it scorched everything around them, including the house.
“No. It won’t burn you. But it will make a bubbling mess.”
“Can we do it today?” Zack asked, his hands clasped together.
“No. I will need to pick up supplies at the craft store this week. But, we can plan to do it if it’s something you’re both interested in.” She figured the more hands-on activities she could work out for them to do, the better off they would be. And hopefully it would keep the naughty hijinks to a minimum.
Noah returned with two boxes stacked in his strong grip. He had the sexiest arms—strong and sinewy, flexing and bulging as he lowered the boxes to the floor.
“Dad, we’re going to build a volcano,” Wade stated with glee.
“Is that right?” Noah shot her an inquisitive look.
“It’s modeling clay deal with baking soda, like we did in science class in high school.”
“Ah, it’s been a while for me. I’ll get the last one, and then we will get out of your hair.” Noah turned on his heel, and wow, just wow. His backside was a butt she could bounce a quarter off. Looking at that and his sexy muscular back, she refrained from fanning her face—but just barely.
Morgan had no idea why he had such an effect on her. He just did. She hadn’t been here a full ten minutes, and she was already wondering how long she would last before needing to rip the man’s clothes off.
Would he shove her away? Fire her?
Maybe she needed to start dating; find some guys her age to hang out with, and get her needs met. That way, she could stop thinking about Noah and sex in the same sentence. Hell, she was going to be seeing him without his shirt on quite a bit.
Oh god, she might even see him in his underwear from time to time, since they lived together.
Morgan tore her gaze from the empty spot that Noah had just vacated. Both boys had been studying her while she ogled their daddy’s behind. She flushed at being caught spying.
Excerpt #3
Weekday mornings in Noah’s house were akin to attempting to corral a runaway stampede. It was messy, dangerous, and someone typically ended up hurt. And that was just the first hour of Noah’s day. From there he tended to run on coffee and chaos, moving from one thing to the next, until he returned from the stables each night, and got the boys into bed. Rinse and repeat, every day, into infinity and beyond.
Dressed for the day, Noah yawned as he left his bedroom. There were some enticing aromas wafting from the kitchen, one of them was coffee. If Morgan had already gotten the coffee going for him, he was going to give her a raise. He noticed the boys’ bedroom door was already wide open and the room empty of the wild hellions he was raising. But then he detected the sound of their enthusiastic chatter coming from the kitchen too.
Curious, he ambled down the hall as he buttoned up his lightweight plaid. It was late August, and going to be another scorcher outside today. Most likely, he would end up stripping off his shirt and white tank beneath to his skin before the day was done. But as horse master for Silver Springs Ranch, he tried to look respectable most days.
In the kitchen, Morgan stood at the stove wearing a baby pink tank top and cut off jean shorts, giving him a view of her stellar legs. She’d fastened her dark chestnut hair into two braids that fell over her slim shoulders. The tank top clung to her lithe form and cupped the swell of her pert breasts. Unexpected lust punched through Noah with such force, he almost staggered at the image of taking her bent over the counter, those long braids in his hand as he fucked her from behind.
Where the fuck had that come from?
Morgan turned with a spatula in her hand and a smile on her beguiling face. “Morning. Coffee?”
“Yes.” He nodded, his mouth dry as he tried to corral his raging hormones. But then she went up on her tiptoes, stretching to reach a coffee mug, and the hem of her tank top rose to reveal creamy, smooth skin, and a dainty butterfly tattoo on her lower back that was sexy as hell.
“Here, let me get that.” Instead of having her struggle and continuing to stare at her like she was his breakfast, he stepped into her space and reached over her head. Their fingers brushed. Sensual energy zapped through him, even as he fought the rising tide in his groin.
Noah looked down the same moment she glanced up. The air between them sizzled with erotic undercurrents. The pulse at the base of her neck beat rapidly, like fluttering hummingbird wings. Her pink tongue darted out and wet her bottom lip. It would be so easy to dip his head down for a taste.
But sanity and control prevailed. He grabbed a mug and backed away from her far too enticing body. He had to, otherwise he would do something epically dumb, like kiss the new nanny.
I enjoyed reading all three excerpts and they certainly made me want to read the whole story!
