Summer Blood, Carolina Sky Book 1

Excerpts:
#1
Matthew raised his hand to indicate he wanted a beer, even though he wasn’t sure if he’d drink it or not. The bartender slid a frosty bottle in front of him. Finally. “Maybe I thought that made you safe. Since you have a date and all.”
“Oh, no, you’re wrong about that. It makes me more dangerous.” Gwin stared into his eyes, daring him to continue the flirting. It was anything but harmless.
He remembered that other face. A goth-looking chick.
With fangs.
He had to get out of there. He looked away, trying to block it all. It had been nothing. His drunken imagination. That was all. “Well, enjoy the show.” He headed back to the stage, trying to seem like he wasn’t hurrying. He’d drank a few swallows of beer. He didn’t want to drink too much, but he was more afraid of her than falling back into alcohol.
He gave the cues to start the second set. He knew John was staring at him. He could feel it burning into the back of his head, but he wasn’t going to address it. Not now and maybe not ever.

#2
Walking off the stage, which was little more than a raised platform, Matthew felt, well, not exhilarated, but not drained either. He felt good.
Matthew had given a great performance along with the rest of the band, but he’d gotten energy back from the audience as well. It felt more like an exchange than his energy being sucked or poured out of him. He wasn’t sure how to describe it, but it was different, and it made all the difference.
He could do this.
And his band was incredible. Wayne and John had a backbeat chemistry that rocked the house and Kato played like a rock star. Looked like a rock star. Matthew wanted to rock him.
He sighed, staring at Kato’s ass in those tight jeans. They were all dripping with sweat, and the humid night air did nothing to cool him as they pushed equipment out to the van. They loaded up and piled in, all pressed too close together with the equipment. It was fine for going to and from the gigs from the hotel but traveling hours on the road to the next beach town made for cramped quarters. It kept Matthew entirely too close to Kato.
At the hotel, they left the equipment in the van. Matthew considered the sleeping situation. Rooming with John wouldn’t save them enough to buy new transportation, so he left it alone. He didn’t want to double with him, and they could afford three rooms with John and Matthew having the two singles, while Kato and Wayne bunked together.
“Hey, Matt!” Kato drew his attention.
John looked over at them, lips pressed together, but he went inside when Matthew unlocked his door.
Matthew expected sooner or later, someone would complain. “Yeah? Are you going to ask me about rooms?”
He pushed into Matthew’s room. “Sort of.”
Matthew’s pulse kicked up, and he swallowed hard. “We talked about that before.”
“Yeah, well, this is sort of different.”
Matthew reluctantly shut the door behind him. “Different how?”
Kato stepped into his space, bringing them nose to nose. He made the sexiest noise Matthew had ever heard.
Matthew couldn’t breathe.
“I’m thinking maybe you could share with me instead of Wayne. You’re a lot sexier.” He stepped closer, their noses touching.
“Uh, I-I don’t—”
“Yes, you do.”
“Oh, I do, but this isn’t—” John would not take this well. It could fuck up everything.
“A good idea? Yeah, I thought about that, and I’m not really caring.”
“Stop interrupting me.”
Then Kato pressed his lips against Matthew’s. The world stopped. Electricity tingled Matthew’s lips and pulsed down to his cock. He grabbed Kato’s shirt, scrunching it in his hands at the shoulders. He wanted nothing more than to have his hands all over the man. Everything about him rang Matthew’s bells and revved him up, and as Kato slid his tongue between Matthew’s lips, he found he didn’t care how bad this idea was, since his brain had stopped functioning the moment they’d touched.

#3
“I’m Wayne Perry. So nice to finally meet you.”
“Finally?”
“Uh, yeah, well, you know…” He cleared his throat. “I was looking forward to this audition, and uh, I’ve heard of you.” His gaze veered off to the side. He was either incredibly nervous or hiding something. Matthew didn’t care which. He wasn’t expecting much.
“Okay. Show me what you’ve got.” He gestured to the stage.
“Right, yeah.” Wayne hopped up on the stage and opened his case. He pulled out a pearly blue Ibanez bass. He fiddled with it a minute, checking the tune, and then broke out into “Another One Bites the Dust.”
Matthew rolled his eyes. Typical riff for bassists to play. “What else you got?”
A sly smile crossed his face and his bass line shifted to Tool’s “Schism,” then a little bit of Rush. Matthew couldn’t deny he had some talent. He finished up with some Red Hot Chili Peppers. “How’s that? I didn’t really prepare anything too special. Just what I normally play.”
“Can you play country? Jazz?”
“If I have to.” He bumped out an old Dwight Yoakam tune, “Fast As You.” It was smooth.
“Do you have anything original?”
Wayne scrunched his face up. “Nothing that’s ready, but, uh…” Then he played something unfamiliar. It had remnants of rock with a bluesy beat.
“I like you. Do you have any other commitments in the near future?”
“Nope. I’m all yours.” Something was odd about the way he said that as if he knew all along he’d be playing with Carolina Sky.

#4
He stumbled through the last song as his eyes scanned the crowd.
There she was again. Looking up at him. Glaring and licking her lips deliciously at the same time. Then she smiled, lips pulling back from her teeth. Fangs!
Something in her pulled on him, pulled his energy. Made him weak. He dropped to his knees. He thought he was going to puke right there on the stage, but then the feeling was gone. When he looked up, that strange goth-woman was gone as well.
#5 – you may not want to use this one – up to you….

Matthew went back to his room to wait for the others to give them the news. He had words swirling in his head, dancing along with some music. He had to write it down. He took out a pen and jotted them out, then grabbed his guitar to play.

Onslaught
Written by Matthew Calloway & Carolina Sky

My heart is constantly pounding after you
You’re pulling my strings
You’re pushing my limits
I’m after whatever this brings

Washing over me
Onslaught…
Pouring over me
Onslaught…
Taking over me and I can’t resist
Your onslaught…

My adrenaline is pumping through my soul
Telling me the things
That I won’t admit but
You’re stealing my dreams

Washing over me
Onslaught…
Pouring over me
Onslaught…
Taking over me and I can’t resist
Your onslaught…

Onslaught, onslaught…
Running over me, taking over me,
Onslaught, onslaught…
I can’t resist, the kiss of your lips
Onslaught, onslaught…

Washing over me
Onslaught…
Pouring over me
Onslaught…
Taking over me and I can’t resist
Your onslaught…

He was playing the last chorus when the knock came. He placed his guitar on the bed and opened the door. “Come in here, ya’ll.” He was never more excited to see them.
