FROM CHAPTER 3 

Soft swirls of light rose, dissipating as they spoke.  

“The others are capable, but they need our help. Peace will not come easily. We must give them strength.” 

“Druth will destroy our home. He will hurt the gifted ones if the nectar finds him.”  

“They will not survive him.” 

“The others must seek the will for survival. They   must understand their own power.” 

A transient suspension held the beings in the preserve. Faint flecks of light dotted the landscape. 

“In these two worlds, our ideas converge, yet  collide.” 

“He must be stopped!” 

“It is true.” 

“Naculea must endure.” 

“It is chosen.” 

Now resting upon the succulent, running rich with the life-giving nectar, the beings absorbed its energy, glowing as bright as the sun.  

Thirst became a distant need yet again. 

“We must warn… the one.” 

“The one who sees.” 

“The one who sees and hears much.” 

“It is the only way.” 

Final clicks faded into silence. 

  

FROM CHAPTER 19 

He recalled his father’s demands for his mother to stop drinking. He thought back to the time when his mom had appeared unstable.  

He reached into his other pocket, this time pulling  out two items: his mother’s obituary and an article about her car accident. All of these pieces that don’t line up. What happened, Mom?  

Jordan read the items. A dearth of silence lifted the words from the pages. He slumped to his knees, hoping to hear the reel spin, to at least send ripples into the  well of pain dragging him down into a sea of the unknown surrounding his mother’s death. 

FROM CHAPTER 22 - OFFICER JOHNSTON, a seasoned, burly patrol cop, opened a large filing cabinet and pulled  out a thick folder. Reading glasses rested midway down his nose. The dent between his eyebrows deepened as he perused the contents of the folder, including a photograph of a young man in his late teens with short, curly hair.  

He read the bold headline sprawled across a  yellowed newspaper clipping—‘Murder in Danville 

Heights: First in Over 30 Years’.  

The name of the victim was Ross Dawson.  

Johnston had been the first officer on the scene. He remembered it clearly. He had never seen anything like it—a young man bloodied, bruised, and choked to   death inside the preserve. He felt deep sorrow for the victim and was still haunted by the traumatic sight.  

Shocked bystanders had watched as first responders secured the scene. He recalled pained faces in the  crowd whispering and wondering about what had happened. 

FROM CHAPTER 35  

Kinsu’s eyes had watered, stinging all night.  

Chase’s hands were stiff with pain.  

Rhee’s nose gravitated toward foul odors.  

Alex’s tongue had swelled up, burning for an hour.  

But time would not wait until perfect conditions arrived.   It   was  all  starting   to  add   up   and    weigh  

down. Still, Jordan, Chase, and Alex met up on the walk to school. 

“I told you guys it wasn't a good idea to go into the preserve.” Alex swung his backpack from one shoulder to the other. “My tongue is so swollen.”  

Jordan  rolled  his eyes. “Well,  you  went,  too,  and  

here we are.”  

“You never even stopped to give me a chance to explain why we shouldn't have been there,” Alex said.  

Jordan glared at Alex. “When I looked back and saw you,    you    were    way    behind    us.    That    was    your 

opportunity to turn around, and you didn't.” 

“We could've at least talked it out.” 

Jordan threw his arms up. “Well, we didn't, so now what?” 

“What do you mean by that, Jordan? It's okay for our lives to be falling apart?” 

“Look,   we're   doing  good  by  being  out  there.   It’s 

hard, but we’re getting closer. You saw it. Those people need us.”
