Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?
I’m K.M. Scott, and I’m a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of romance. I’ve been a writer for what feels like my entire life, and when I graduated from grad school with my degree in history, I began teaching and writing academic articles. Then one day, I was with one of my fellow faculty members at our local Borders reading a romance novel. I’d recently really gotten into them again after being away for a few years, and she asked me why I don’t write one. I thought about it, and that night I began writing my first romance. (That book is hidden in a drawer never to be seen. Every writer needs that first novel to get their sea legs about them.) Six months later, I had a second novel written, and as they say, the rest is history.
What is something unique/quirky about you?
When I’m writing, I often watch the same movie over and over again. Usually the movie has nothing to do with the book. It’s just something that I do. For example, when I was writing the first three books in my Heart of Stone series, I must have watched The Curious Case of Benjamin Button two hundred times. Right now, I’m writing a book, and I’ve watched a movie I found purely by accident almost a hundred times. It has nothing to do with the story. It’s just a thing I do.
What do you do to unwind and relax?
When I want to relax, I have a glass of wine and watch a good movie. Or a bad one. I find enjoyment in most movies, even the ones that aren’t great.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Sensuous and Desirous?
Alex and Kat are the couple in Sensuous and Desirous. Alex is a hedonist. His goal in life is pure enjoyment. He’s also a head chef at his family’s restaurant, CK. And he’s gorgeous. Kat isn’t the exact opposite of Alex, but she’s close. She’s serious, but she wishes she could always be having a good time like him. She’s also a chef, but her work situation is nowhere as good as Alex’s. She has a terrible boss who makes her hate her job, even though she loves cooking.
Tell us about your main characters- what makes them tick?
Alex is all about having a good time because he’s a hedonist. He’s lived a pretty charmed life, getting what he wants when he wants it. Until Kat. And it’s that inability to just have her because he wants her that intrigues him. He loves the challenge.
Kat is often misunderstood because she’s serious. She also has some daddy issues she’s toting around, which makes being who she is difficult since she idolizes her father.
How did you come up with the title of the book?
Sensuous refers to Alex since he’s a hedonist, and Desirous refers to Kat once he falls for her.
Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?
Alex and Kat compete on a cooking reality show, so I had to watch a lot of hours of them to get a good feel of how things should play out in the fictional show I include in the books. I’d never watched any reality shows, so it was an interesting bit of research.
Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
All my characters are entirely from my imagination. I occasionally have muses, but I’ve never written a character who actually exists in real life.
Do the characters all come to you at the same time or do some of them come to you as you write?
Minor and secondary characters tend to come to me as I write the book, but the main characters are fully fleshed out before I write the first word in any book.
What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?
I’ve researched everything from the native birds in a certain part of France, the beautiful city of Venice, the Russian language, winemaking, and many other details for previous books. For this duet, my main research was learning about cooking reality shows.
Do you see writing as a career?
I’ve been a full-time writer since 2013 when I left my job teaching college students to write romance.
Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?
I always need something going on in the background when I write. Many times it’s the same movie over and over. Other times, it’s music.
A day in the life of the author?
A typical day in my life is I wake up, usually around 5am, and feed the cats (I have a bunch). Then I work out for an hour or two. After I shower and get dressed, I eat breakfast and then get to my desk, usually by 9am. I write until mid-afternoon, and then I get to errands or other things I need to do.
What is your writing process? For instance do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first?
I’m a hardcore plotter. I extensively write down everything that happens in the story before I type the first word. Often I’ll write down dialogue in the plotting process, along with setting details.
Do you believe in writer’s block?
Writer’s block is a very real thing. I’ve had it last for months on end. When it happens to me, I immerse myself in other creative things, such as movies, music, and reading. Sometimes my brain just needs a rest, so I respect that and work with it while it’s happening.
