Hidden Comrade
Project Morpheus Book 2
by Jillian David
Genre: Military Romantic Suspense
The Project Morpheus series: Military romance, steamy passion, and heart-stopping suspense.
The Morpheus Squad: Ultimate soldiers who hide in plain sight, fierce protectors risking their existence for those they love... and virally-altered, ticking time bombs.
Pele Tuitama’s Morpheus Squad mission infiltrating a Smoky Mountain children's camp is FUBAR. He might be a virally-enhanced military experiment, but augmented abilities won’t help him protect Reagan McNeill, the most unsecure-able target imaginable. Sweet Reagan’s kisses and the possibility of a future he should never consider, distracts his laser focus. If Pele can’t keep Reagan safe from an evil adversary bent on revenge against the entire McNeill family, then Reagan will die.
After a nasty breakup,
Reagan doesn’t trust any man—or herself. Enter handsome Pele, the
world’s worst camp counselor. She doesn’t believe his story or
his motives. When overly-protective Pele draws her close and then
rejects her, Reagan is finished with games. Then the truth she learns
rips open recently-healed emotional wounds.
In order to
escape through the mountains, Pele must share his deadliest secret.
To have a chance at their future, they must reveal their demons and
pray for acceptance ... and survival.

pockets of power-hungry CFO Beau Lequire. Now her sadistic ex-boss,
Lequire, wants revenge. Her only chance of escape rests in the lethal
hands of the man who once rejected her: Jake. All she needs to do is

What inspired you to write this book?
Okay, let’s go back to Project Morpheus series book #1 FALLEN COMRADE. That’s what started the whole thing.
I moved into a house that had a cute walk-in closet and at the back of the closet was a built-in bench that hid a storage drawer. My writer brain immediately said, hey what if instead, it hid a secret escape route that led to a tunnel through the basement which opened up a hundred feet away into the woods? What kind of person would need a house with an escape tunnel?
The rest is history.
Amazingly, when I published FALLEN COMRADE, the first two chapters that contained the escape tunnel had to be cut!! But readers can still find these lost chapters on my website here: https://www.jilliandavid.net/blog/the-lost-first-two-chapters-of-fallen-comrade
What can we expect from you in the future?
Completing the first three books in Project Morpheus. Book #3 is finished and in revisions, so I know exactly what’s going to happen to younger sister, Britt, and long-suffering Morpheus Squad member, Red!
After that, I’m pitching a medical romance series (fingers crossed!). The gist of the series is Northern Exposure meets Gray’s Anatomy.
The Project Morpheus series is coming out in audiobook this year, so that will be exciting!
I have a completed cruise ship romantic suspense that needs a home. The gist of that story is Zodiac Killer meets The Love Boat.
Finally, Project Morpheus, Phase 2, will start to take shape. This band of brothers isn’t done yet!
Do you have any “side stories” about the characters?
Project Morpheus is currently three books: FALLEN COMRADE, HIDDEN COMRADE, and SILENT COMRADE. There are more teammates in the Morpheus Squad, and I have plans for them in Project Morpheus, Phase 2.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in HIDDEN COMRADE?
Pele Tuitama is an ex-Special Forces member of the underground Morpheus Squad, a band of virally-enhanced soldiers who were subjects of a military experiment gone dreadfully wrong. Along with his teammates, Pele is a super soldier and ultimate protector. He’s also a ticking time bomb.
Outdoor educator, Reagan McNeill protects her heart at all costs after leaving an abusive relationship. Just when she starts to trust Pele’s sexy kisses and powerful embraces, he pushes her away. Forget it. No man, regardless of how sinfully sexy, is worth the emotional risk. Or is he?
How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?
This book came on the heels of the first book’s creation. When I outlined FALLEN COMRADE, I initially envisioned a single title with the two main characters. Then I expanded the universe to more ex-Special Forces and the McNeill family of sisters. I wanted to create settings that was familiar to me (sorry for blowing you up in book #1, small town Waffle House), but each sister’s background is still unique. For HIDDEN COMRADE, I created a fake outdoor education/summer camp in the Smokies, not unlike one that I worked at back in my college days.
Where did you come up with the names in the story?
For the sisters, I picked Irish first names that went with their last name, “McNeill.”
For the band of brothers, I mixed their real names and nicknames to make a motley crew.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
This whole series involves heroes who aren’t just alphas, they are Alphazillas. I took the concept of Alpha Male and turned the heat and alpha-ness way up! It was really fun making these big, hulking, testosterone-riddled dudes get totally owned by the strong, confident women who are more than a match for them.
Tell us about your main characters- what makes them tick?
Pele Tuitama is from American Samoa but he’s never really felt like he had a true home and family – until joining the Morpheus Squad. The Morpheus Virus military experiment has given him super strength, the ability to see patterns, and the inability to feel fear. He wants to stay close to Reagan, solely for the purpose of the mission. Nothing else.
Reagan McNeill is nursing a broken heart and physical bruises after breaking up with her abusive ex. He wanted to change her, and Reagan has had to re-learn that she is perfect the way she is. No way will she change for any man ever again. Even if his kisses are as toasty as a crackling campfire.
How did you come up with the title of the book?
Initially the team was Ghost Squad, not Morpheus Squad, but it didn’t resonate well so I changed it.
FALLEN COMRADE is the name of the first book in the series, and it’s a nod to the veteran’s organization “Fallen Comrades” with its corrupt CFO siphoning funds away from veterans and into his pockets. I tried to find something that had the same vibe as the Wounded Warrior project.
I kept the “comrade” theme through the three books as there is a background thread where we learn how the corrupt CFO is dealing with Russian drug cartels to bring in more money.
Who designed your book covers?
The amazing folks at Evernight Publishing. Aren’t the covers fabulous? I could not be happier with them!
If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
HIDDEN COMRADE? No, I feel like that book came out the way I wanted it to, and I wrote it to the best of my ability. I’m pretty proud of how sexy and suspenseful it is!
Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?
I learned that it’s easier to sell a three book deal when all three books are already written …
If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?
Anything specific you want to tell your readers?
My readership is small in numbers but mighty in devotion, and they bring me so much joy. I’m very accessible to my readers, so I will often link my email address directly in a newsletter so readers can contact me or ask questions. To my readers: thank you for supporting my wild stories – I love you all!
How did you come up with name of this book? (see above answer)
What is your favorite part of this book and why?
My favorite part of HIDDEN COMRADE is the scene in the Cotton Eyed Joe dance club where Reagan basically tells her ex where to shove it and finally breaks free of the pain from that relationship, allowing her to risk her heart for Pele.
If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?
I’d love to go trail running with Reagan McNeill in the Smokies!
Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
Most characters are completely made up, but one particular character is based on a real person. The villain, Beau Lequire, is the corrupt CFO of Fallen Comrades, a charity for wounded veterans. He parlayed his supposed “military injury” into preferential government contracts and built his career saying that he was a wounded veteran. I based his character on a real contractor who did exactly that.
Braulio Castillo was an IRS contractor who embellished (faked) an injury while in military prep school and somehow was able to work the system so that he got preferential government contracts. There was a video of Senator Tammy Duckworth during an inquiry, just taking this guy to task. The irony, of course, is that Tammy Duckworth, a true veteran who had paid a massive price in her service to our nation, is a double leg amputee. Anyway, the video is beautiful. She just eviscerates the guy for bilking the system. Here’s the video if you enjoy watching real heroes call out cowards. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=duckworth+irs+government+contractor&t=osx&iar=videos&safari_group=9&iax=videos&ia=videos&iai=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DOV_4sqPjDBE
Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
I outline pretty tightly before writing each book, and have some series outlines. So I know not only where each story is going but also how it fits into the overall arc of the series.
Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
Do you enjoy angst, buried emotional wounds, and redemption that requires ultimate sacrifice? How about confident, capable women who are resourceful, smart, and sexy? No?
Or maybe you would enjoy reading about the most Alpha alphas that the world has ever seen – they’re ALPHA-ZILLAS. I took tormented, muscle-bound protectors, who don’t believe they deserve love, and turned the dial up to ELEVEN. Seriously, if you like your alphas WAY over the top alpha male, then this is the series for you!
Have you written any other books that are not published?
Yes! My first book, Reluctant Sanctuary, will be buried with me, never to see the light of day. I also have a medical romance in process as well as a romantic suspense called CRUISE CONTROL, which is basically the Zodiac Killer meets The Love Boat!
If your book had a candle, what scent would it be?
Testosterone, pine trees, and S’mores. ;)
What did you edit out of this book?
Not so much HIDDEN COMRADE, but book #1 in the series, FALLEN COMRADE, I took out the first two amazing chapters. I am so proud of those first two chapters, and frankly, those chapters are how I got my agent. But the chapters didn’t get the hero and heroine together quickly enough, which is a necessity for any good romance. Is there a writer whose brain you would love to pick for advice? Who would that be and why?
The nice thing about the writing community and Romancelandia is that authors are very open and generous with their advice and tips. I can toss out a question and – voila! – advice.
