Pride

Animal Senses Book 9

by Jacqueline Paige

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Banished by her Alpha, who happens to be her father, Amari learns how to survive without help. Driven by revenge, she discovers there are a few things in life she’s good at, but none of them are skills normal society would find acceptable.

Rogue shifters that were only without a clan because they were hiding from the organization hunting and caging their kind are responsible for the death of Tripp’s father. After securing his mother and sister a home where they’ll be safe, he ends up as an outlaw – until the Shifter Alliance takes him in and puts him on the one team that fits his off-the-rail, and a little bit crazy style.

His only objective is to end the organization terrorizing his kind. Until he meets his female equal that takes ‘out of control’ to all new levels and he has no idea how to handle it—or her.

Excerpt #1:
With the snowfall, he had to stay in the shadows, or else he’d stand out like a flashing sign against the white. When he reached the point where the hill leveled off into an open area, he felt the satisfaction of being right. There was a camp set up. Three tents grouped together.  Motion in front of one of them had him zero in on it. Two large men were crowded around a third one. Shit. The possibility of two from the bear clan was something he didn’t relish. If three were here, that meant he had to deal with four if he waited too long.
“I told you not to get too close.” The one said, sounding more annoyed than anything else.
“It’s not going to grow back even if you shift, you idiot.” The other one told him.
Tripp held this position, breathing into his hand so it filtered his breath toward the ground, and couldn’t be seen in the cold air. What wouldn’t grow back? His interest was piqued now.
The smaller man stood up and jerked his head away from the other one.  He was holding a cloth against the side of his head. Tripp’s eyebrows went up in surprise. He looked at the tents, trying to see if there was anyone in them. Whoever had done that to that man wasn’t friendly. He didn’t detect any movement. First guess, the princess wasn’t as docile as he’d pictured her to be.
“Pouring gas on her was stupid,” the one closest to him growled and waved his arm, “now we can’t move her closer to the fire to keep her warm.”
He didn’t like the sound of that. They’d poured gas on her. Who did something like that? He shuddered, something that strongly scented on any shifter was just cruel.
“The bitch bit half my ear off.” The other one growled, “let her freeze.”
Tripp’s lips twitched with amusement, but it was short-lived. He needed them to move out of their little huddle so he could see if they had any weapons on them—and he needed to find the princess with the sharp teeth.

Excerpt #2:
In a blur of movement, the woman that was bound to the tree went screeching past him, both in movement and sound. Tripp moved closer, then pulled out his knife. How the hell did she get free and what was she doing?
She lunged at the little one, growling a low eerie sound. Her cat was closer to the surface, making his cat come forward even more.
One of the big ones started to move, so Tripp flicked the knife and landed it in his foot. Right through the boot. “Don’t.” He advised. The other big one dropped to his knees and held his hands up. That was more like it. Later, he’d internally bitch with his cat about how easy this had been and how they hadn’t gotten a single swing in.
Tripp stepped to the side so he could see what she was doing while keeping an eye on his new friends. Buddy was on his knees now in a chokehold. He wanted to blink to make sure he wasn’t hallucinating but didn’t take the chance he’d miss something else. She leaned down, close to his whole ear and he wondered if she planned to bite that one off too.
“This is for shooting darts in me,” she moved her hand to his throat and that’s when Tripp saw the glint of metal, “and the gas.” She started to straighten up and he figured she’d gotten it out of her system. In a move he could never have imagined, she stabbed the knife into his carotid artery and held his chin up, so it spurted out all over. It got her right in the face, she licked her lips and then looked at the dying man, “just like candy,” she whispered.
He knew his jaw was close to hitting the ground, but he honestly couldn’t decide what to do at that moment. The princess he’d pictured evaporated right before his eyes. He glanced at the other two. The one was hunched over his foot, reminding Tripp he’d left a weapon too close to him. The other one was reflecting his thoughts, of ‘what the hell just happened?’  Stepping closer, he, motioned with his gun for the injured one to move back. He shuffled back. “Hands nice and high.” When he complied, Tripp ducked in and picked up his knife.
Backing up, he kept those two in his sight as he turned to see the princess standing there, blood all over her hand and cheek. She wiped her hand back over her hair, streaking it red too, and didn’t seem to care. When she moved toward the other two, he quickly cut her off. “We need information.” He gave her a wary look, “they talk better when they’re alive.”

Excerpt #3:
Closing his eyes, he reached for his animal. As soon as they weren’t within earshot of anyone else, they would be having a talk. Like why the hell hadn’t he let him know she was their mate? Tripp couldn’t smell shit, but the gas smell, but his cat’s weird behavior made sense now. Opening his eyes, he turned his head, with his hands still on top of his head, and looked at the bathroom door. He couldn’t blame his cat, hell, he’d been drawn to her too, which should have set off all the alarms for him. He was never this distracted on a mission, never, not even with some of the crazy shit he’d seen had his attention ever strayed from the object he was tasked with.
Blowing out a breath, he dropped his hands and put them on his hips. Now what? Did he tell her? He frowned, was her taser still in his pack? He needed to make sure it was. Shaking his head, he looked at her boots outside the bathroom door, of course confiscating the three knives that he knew she had on her might be a good idea too. He had to tell her. Didn’t he?
Shit. He’d marked a female without consent. The next thought popped into his head and his legs gave out, he dropped to a squat and rested his back against the dresser behind him. He’d marked Vesper Hughes’s daughter. Lifting his hands, he rubbed them over his face and then held them over his mouth. His mate was an Alpha’s daughter. How had fate fucked up this bad?
Dropping his hands, he looked at the bathroom door again. The water stopped. It was nothing against her, she was pretty spectacular, even in her slightly scary, out-of-control moments—but Vesper Hughes was going to have his balls for this. He stood up. Would he kick his mother and sister out of that clan? Shit.
Tripp reached for his phone, and it wasn’t in his pocket. He glanced around the room and almost sighed in relief to see it sitting on the table. He needed to—what? He couldn’t call Kenzo freaking out about this. He definitely couldn’t call his mother and tell her he’d marked a female without consent, she’d have his balls for that alone. Fuck. When he told Amari that he’d marked her, she’d probably cut off his balls. He scowled at the door, he wasn’t even sure she liked males, never mind having a mate. His body responded to the thought of her, and he looked down at the bulge in the front of his jeans, then rolled his eyes, okay, she liked them for that.
Blowing out a breath, he walked over to his phone and then turned around and paced away from it again. The only thing he knew right now was no matter what he was probably going to be ball-less at the outcome of this.
