She hates her family. He's hiding behind his teenage sex life. They form a band to escape from it all. On tour, can they start over....or will all secrets come out on the open road? Carla Bucchio never cared about things like boyfriends and SATs. If she did, maybe life at 20 would be more exciting than developing photos on Long Island. When she chooses the guitar over a social life, it only makes sense because no one talks to her anyway. Music may be Pete Albrecht's life but what good is his talent if he has no one to share it with? When he's not getting bitched about coffee at work, he's getting nagged about college by his girlfriend. What would they say if they really knew about him? In 2001 when boy bands and backup dancers have saturated pop culture, Carla and Pete start a rock band. Despite his girlfriend's manipulations and her mother's drunken disapproval, the two form a secret connection through the music. Before heading out on their cross-country tour, tragedy turns the world upside down forcing them to decide if the band is just a teenage dream or their gateway to freedom...and to each other? Slanted and Disenchanted is the provocative first book in Lisa Czarina Michaud's coming-of-age Disenchanted series. Told with wry humor with nostalgic '90s undertones, it's High Fidelity meets On the Road with a dash of Moxie that explores sexual tension in friendships, the confusion of adulting, the love and chaos of family....and the soundtracks that get us through it all. *contains strong language, drug and sexual references, and sexual experiences.

Lisa Czarina Michaud is an author and translator. Born and raised in Chelsea before a family relocation to Long Island, she has been writing her New York stories her entire life. Wanting to see the left coast, she attended The Evergreen State College before stumbling through adulthood in Hollywood, then back east to Brooklyn and eventually Paris. Lisa's work has been featured in various publications. She currently lives in France with her husband, son, and cat, Le Tigre. Slanted and Disenchanted is her first novel.
Jillian Kuhl is a voiceover actor living in NYC with her husband and loving, judgmental dog! You can hear her voice on national commercials, radio, and video games. Notably, she plays a character in the Red Dead Redemption II video game. (Earned big points with her husband’s friends!) Originally from Wisconsin, Jillian earned her degree in Musical Theatre before finding her way behind the mic. She enjoys being outside, eating snacks, and watching trashy reality shows.
Zach Lazar Hoffman is a full time actor and voice actor, father of four living in Nashville, TN. A dedicated husband and father, Zach seeks to grow in his artistry to mastery and is dedicated to the art of acting, devoted to the craft of storytelling, and committed to the process of becoming another. His passion is to demonstrate the broken state of humanity through devastating performances in an effort to inspire good in every soul.

THE SLANTED AND DISENCHANTED AUDIOBOOK TOUR PLAYLIST
  • “Summer Babe” - Pavement
    • Because the title of the book is a play off their iconic album Slanted and Enchanted the first song on the playlist has to be the album’s “hit” “Summer Babe” to kick start this rock nerd adventure!
  • “Sheela-na-gig” - PJ Harvey
    • A classic among the best girlfriends in my novel, Carla and Alex. PJ Harvey washes the men right out of her hair in this 90s feminist classic.
  • “Take Five” - Dave Brubeck Quartet
    • A jazz standard, Joe Morello’s “gorgeous 5/4 unusual time signature” serves as a total inspiration to Pete, our jazz drumming prodigy. Once he learned this solo was when he knew he was a real drummer.
  • “A Night in Tunisia” - Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers
    • Another turning point in Pete’s rhythmic education, Art Blakey (who inspired Pete to get a 1960s Gretsch Round Badge drum kit) and the Jazz Messengers live performance of this iconic jazz number with its insane jazz solo is no joke, neither were the blisters on Pete’s hands!
  • “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” - The Beatles
    • That moment Carla and Pete run into each other at the photo store ...and what were those photos developing behind her!? Naughty!
  • “Love is Like an Itching in my Heart” - The Supremes
    • Carla may be punk rock but she loves herself some good Motown too and there’s no better group than Diana Ross and The Supremes with one of their best songs. Also, love is so an itching in Carla’s heart…will she ever find it?
  • “I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts” - X
    • Carla and Pete may have conflicting music tastes but one band they can agree on is X, one of the pioneers in feminist punk. This is their softer side with a duet that Pete and Carla really need to cover one of these days.
  • “The Last Goodbye” - Jeff Buckley
    • Is it the last goodbye because they won’t be saying it anymore or is it the last goodbye because it’s over? The big debate between Carla and Pete, the cynic and the romantic continues…
  • “I’m Still in Love With You” - Al Green
    • The vinyl that Pete lends Carla right before that moment in the basement happened.
  • “Le Temps de L’Amour” - Francoise Hardy
    • Because how can there be a sexy French character without some sexy French music.Oh là là, indeed.
  • “I’m Waiting for the Day” - The Beach Boys
    • From the classic Pet Sounds album, the chef d’oeuvre of genius Brian Wilson is a Carla and Pete classic because who can resist these 1960s harmonies and ideals? Maybe they really weren’t made for these times…
  • “White Light/White Heat” - Velvet Underground
    • Because what band isn’t inspired by the Velvet Underground?
  • “You’re Gonna Miss Me” - 13th Floor Elevators
    • Right before Pete leaves for vacation in Montauk with his girlfriend Allison, Carla has a little message for him.
  • “I Would Die 4 U” - Prince
    • Pete’s response after seeing Britney’s “Slave 4 U” performance with the snake at the 2001 VMAs….how dare she rip off Prince!?
  • “Glory Days” - Bruce Springsteen
    • Because sometimes you know when you are living the best days of your life. The Boss certainly knew it.
  • “Planet Telex” - Radiohead
    • And just like that…everything was different in America and they turn to Radiohead to say exactly what was on everyone’s minds. Everything and everyone really was broken…
  • “Surf Wax America” - weezer
    • Nothing says crossing the good ole U.S.A than surfers and sweaters; a classic track from the ultimate nerd album of the 90s.
  • “Hanky Panky” - Tommy and the Shondells
    • Because someone gets some hanky panky on the tour….no names.
  • “All I Want is You” - U2
    • The one U2 song Carla likes because it’s on the Reality Bites soundtrack.
  • “Prince Caspian” - Phish
    • “Who is this?” Carla asks Pete as they cut through the state of Missouri on their way to New Mexico. “Just a little band I read about in the Village Voice,” he lied, knowing that she wouldn’t like it if he told her it was Phish. “I like it.” She smiled as she looked out the window. “I’d like to hear it again.”
  • “Summer Wine” - Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood
    • That duet that leads to that time in the Wal-Mart parking lot…
  • “Malibu” - Hole
    • They reached as far as the van would take them….looking out onto the coasts of California…now what?
  • “Shadow of a Doubt” - Sonic Youth
    • The song Pete wanted to play but felt his best friend Tony wouldn’t have known what to do with it, this song feels like the closer for this first installment of the series. It’s a little dreamy, a little eerie but with enough intrigue to carry on to the next novel! See you next spring for Part Deux.
From Author Lisa Czarina Michaud
The one comment I get, that seems to be universal from book reviewers to my blurb contributors is that the book has a cinematic quality to it, with imagery that plays out like a movie. I love that this is recognized because while I was writing it, I too could see the characters and scenes play out in technicolor in my head, so I’m thrilled that it translated to text and audio. For Carla, I immediately thought of Léa Seydoux when she was in the Christophe Honoré film La Belle Personne. I imagined the thick long dark hair and ‘60s girl-group bangs, as well as the reserved and observant nature of the character. While sketching Carla out, as much as she is her own person with a different background, aesthetically and some surface personality traits, I thought of Léa in this movie. Pete, on the other hand, took some time to fully realize. I knew he had black-rimmed Buddy Holly glasses, French-boy cool, sexy-messy hair, a slim but muscular build and looked better than anyone in an old t-shirt. I was thinking maybe early Kerouac or Brando but more modern day. James Dean without the cliché . For a year, I had all of the details but not a complete face. It wasn’t until after the book went to press that I saw the movie Ladybird and then Call Me By Your Name that I went, there he is! There’s Pete! And that actor who put the pieces together is Timothée Chalamet and not because he’s French like Pete (although that helps!) but he portrays in his films that messy-cool-boy thing with a vulnerability that I hope I captured in Pete.
